Domain Names

If webhosting is your "home on the web", your domain name would be like your mailing address.

Customers, clients and website visitors find you on the internet by typing your domain into their web browser to visit your site. (Or referral from search engines and other sites- more about that here)

Here is a short list of things to keep in mind when choosing a new domain name for your website:

1. Is it easy to say, spell and remember? I always tell clients that the most important marketing tool is word of mouth! If you can shout your domain out to someone passing by at the grocery store, and they can not only remember your address, but run home and type it in to visit your site, you have a winner!

2. Do you like the way it sounds/makes you feel? Chances are, you have big plans for your website. Keep in mind when choosing a new domain name how it sounds to you and the way it makes you feel. Brainstorm a couple different ideas, and when you narrow it down sleep on it. Give yourself some time to think it over, and be sure the name is a good fit for you! Also, don't hesitate to ask friends and family what they think of your ideas!

3. Is it similar to another website, business name, or trademark? Be careful for legal troubles! Thoroughly search your domain name ideas to make sure you won't get into any legal trouble!

4. Does it closely match the business name you are already using? It only makes sense to have your domain and business name to be similar to one another, but it doesn't have to be just the same. A lot of people use acronyms, abbreviations or alternate spellings to make their domain more unique.

5. Think about whether you want to purchase all related tdl's, or just one. Some experts suggest purchasing both the .com, and .net tdl's when you find a domain you really love to make sure it's yours alone.

6. When you are finally ready to register and purchase your domain, make sure you are spelling it correctly! The last thing you want is to be stuck with a misspelled domain name for your brand new website!
